While we experience a lot of learning in the workplace, the quality of our learning depends not just on external factors like who is teaching us or where we are learning, but also on internal mental processes. This inlcudes our own ability to recognise good learning strategies, regulate how well we apply them, and accurately gauge how much we know. These abilities fall under the banner of ‘Metacognition’. In other words, metacognition is what we’re doing when we’re thinking about our own thinking.
