‘What Good Looks Like’: Building a Shared Understanding of Quality Training and Learning in the Mining Industry

16 Aug 2024

This study explores how frontline workers in the mining industry perceive and experience workplace learning and training. By capturing their voices, we identify key factors that support or hinder effective skill development and safe production practices. The findings highlight the need for a shared understanding of what quality training looks like in this high-risk sector, emphasising the importance of integrating both formal training and informal, on-the-job learning.

Workers reported challenges such as inconsistent training delivery, limited mentorship opportunities, and inadequate preparation for role transitions. Practical recommendations are provided to improve training consistency, develop structured mentorship programs, and create realistic simulations to support learning transfer. These insights are critical for ensuring that employees are equipped to adapt to evolving technologies, changing roles, and complex operational demands. This research contributes valuable knowledge to create a sustainable, evidence-informed approach to workplace learning that fosters a skilled, adaptable, and resilient workforce, ultimately promoting safer and more efficient industry practices.
